ZDnet ezine also lists Android devices as seven of the top ten mobile phones of 2011. iPhones and Blackberry devices are also wildly popular with a small marketshare going to Windows phones.
SMS messaging or “texting” was “invented” on 3 December 1992, when Neil Papworth used a personal computer to send the text message “Merry Christmas” via the Vodafone network to the phone of a friend and blossomed sometime around 2007 with 2.4 billion out of 3.3 billion phone subscribers worldwide using text messaging.
Typically, the most prolific text message users are in the 16-24 age group worldwide. The highest texting use could be in the Phillipines with the average subscriber sending 27 messages per day.
Some carriers are charging anywhere 1 and 25 cents USD per message. This can result in catastrophic monthly bills.
With contract and prepaid mobile service companies offering unlimited 3 and 4G internet access google voice and other services can be the most affordable option for heavy texters. Carriers are also offering unlimited text messaging at affordable rates on many different types of phones. Android phones can be found on most major plans and unlocked Androids can take sym cards for multiple plans.
Today texters in Japan use J-Phone’s SkyMail and NTT Docomo’s Short Mail to transmit text messages like email. Short person to person messages are only the tip of the iceburg. Amatuers are already using texting to control some appliances. Vending machines are taking payment via text and videos, images,sound files and hyperlinks ( web addresses ) are also being sent via text messaging.
Businesses are using texting to deliver premium content, internal communications and also to control/monitor some automated processes. System adminstrators can have a server send them a text to their phone when attention is needed for one example.
In the U.K. texting can be used to reach emergency services.
